Why pigeons choose your solar panels
To a pigeon, the space under a solar array is ideal real estate. It’s sheltered from rain and wind, shaded in summer, warm in winter and impossible for cats or birds of prey to reach. Feral pigeons breed several times a year, so one nesting pair can quickly turn into a colony.
Homes in suburbs with lots of rooftop solar, such as Blacktown, Kellyville and the newer estates in the north-west and south-west, tend to see the problem spread from house to house along a street.
The problems they cause
Pigeons under panels are more than a noise problem. Over time they can cause:
- Acidic droppings that stain and break down roof surfaces and panel frames
- Nesting material that blocks gutters and traps moisture on the roof
- Chewed or damaged cabling, which can affect system performance and safety
- Soiled panels that produce less power
- Mites and bacteria associated with pigeon droppings around the home
What doesn’t work very well
Plastic owls, reflective tape, spikes and ultrasonic devices are popular because they’re cheap, but pigeons get used to them quickly. Spikes along the panel edge often just move the birds a little further under the array.
Trying to block the gap with improvised materials such as chicken wire or timber can trap heat, damage the panels or void your warranty if it’s fixed incorrectly.
What does work: solar panel bird mesh
The most reliable fix is a purpose-made mesh barrier around the perimeter of the solar array. The mesh closes the gap between the panels and the roof, so birds physically can’t get underneath, while still allowing air to circulate and water to drain.
A good installation uses UV-stabilised mesh and non-penetrating clips that attach to the panel frame. Nothing is drilled into the panels, so the system and its warranty are left intact.
Clean out first, then mesh
If birds are already nesting, the nests, droppings and debris need to be removed before the mesh goes on. Sealing a nest in just traps the mess and any birds or eggs inside. A proper bird proofing job always starts with a clean-out.
If your panels are also dirty, it’s the perfect time to have them cleaned, since the access equipment is already on the roof.

Frequently asked questions
Is it legal to remove pigeon nests in NSW?
Feral pigeons are not a protected native species in NSW, so their nests can be removed. Native birds are protected, which is why it’s important the job is done by someone who can tell the difference.
When is the best time to bird proof solar panels?
As soon as you notice birds, or straight after installing a new system. The longer birds nest, the bigger the clean-out becomes.
