The short answer

For most Sydney homes, gutters should be cleaned at least once a year, ideally in late winter or spring before storm and bushfire season. If your home is surrounded by trees, every three to four months is a safer schedule.

What changes how often you need a clean

A few things make a big difference to how quickly gutters fill up:

  • Gum trees, which drop leaves and bark all year round, not just in autumn
  • Overhanging branches from your own or a neighbour’s trees
  • Roof pitch, since flatter roofs let more debris settle in the gutters
  • Storms, which wash leaves, moss and grit off the roof in one go
  • Living near bushland, where dry leaves in gutters are an ember risk

Signs your gutters are overdue

Water spilling over the gutter edge during rain is the clearest sign. Other warning signs include plants or grass growing out of the gutter, sagging sections, water stains on eaves or walls, and pooling water around the base of the house.

Blocked gutters can also cause leaks inside. When water can’t drain, it can back up under the roof edge and into the ceiling.

Why it matters before summer

During bushfire season, embers can travel long distances ahead of a fire front. Dry leaves sitting in gutters are one of the most common ways homes catch alight. A clean in spring, combined with ember-rated gutter guard in high-risk areas, is one of the simplest ways to reduce that risk.

When gutter guard makes more sense

If you find yourself needing a gutter clean every few months, gutter guard usually pays for itself. Quality aluminium mesh keeps leaves out while letting water through, so maintenance drops to an occasional check.

Frequently asked questions

Can I clean my own gutters?

You can on a low single-storey home if you’re comfortable on a ladder, but falls from ladders are a leading cause of serious home injuries. For two-storey homes or steep roofs, it’s worth getting it done professionally.

Does gutter cleaning include the downpipes?

It should. A proper clean includes flushing each downpipe to make sure water can drain freely.
